Netflix entered the game as a video rental service in July 1997. The genius behind this idea was Reed Hastings after he paid $40 for a late movie rental. In 1999, they moved to an online subscription service which gave users the freedom of choosing a movie/ Tv show from their website, and it would arrive in the mail. Fast forward, every other person has a Netflix account with millions of movies and TV shows available to binge at our fingertips.
Netflix has undergone multiple business models with constant innovation. After making controversial headlines trying to eliminate password sharing, Netflix has been under some heat. But they are far from done. At the beginning of the year, Netflix announced them making moves in the live-streaming territory.
The Co-Ceo, Ted Sanders, is optimistic about making big moves, as Netflix has a massive global target audience. With a built-in consumer base, he’s confident in successfully launching a live-streaming option.
Currently live streaming giants like Twitch are popular, but can Netflix reach that level? Only time will tell. Looks like they already have one win in the bag. They have joined hands with Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards to host their yearly award show starting in September 2024. It’s a multi-year contract with the SAG-AFTRA union. Before the agreement takes effect, Netflix will broadcast this year’s award show live on their YouTube channel. They will also promote the event via social media.
SAG Awards are granted to acknowledge high applause-worthy performances on television. They are equally as notable as the Oscars.
The 2023 SAG Awards are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on February 26. Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin lead the nominations with five SAG nominations each.
Good news for stand-up comedy enthusiasts out there. Netflix is also partnering up with Chris Rock to host a stand-up comedy show. On March 4, 2023, at 10 p.m. ET, Netflix will broadcast Chris Rock: Selective Outrage as their first-ever live, global streaming event. Make sure you tune in to watch.
