Maybe you’ve watched Stranger Things by yourself or caved in during peer pressure. You’ve gotta admit you binge-watched and desperately counted down the days until the next season dropped. Once you start watching it, you never stop! Then it may not be a surprise that it is recognized as America’s most streamed show in 2022.
Came out in 2016, the Stranger Things first season’s plotline revolves around the residents of a town called Hawkins who are terrorized by a monster-human hybrid creature as researchers at the National Hawkins Laboratory accidentally open a portal between the human world and Upside Down.
As per Neilson’s reports, Stranger Things garnered a jaw-dropping total of 52 billion minutes, and 2022 holds the record for more than 19.4 million years of content being watched. A 21% hike from 2021, when users amassed a total of 15 million years worth of watch time. The fourth season of Stranger Things concluded in 2022 with the final two episodes, which crashed the Netflix app as fans could not hold horses to see them.
Stranger Things each season’s storyline gets more alluring, having your eyes glued to your laptop screen until you have run out of episodes to watch. It is deemed one of the most acclaimed shows of the generation because the directors got every detail right. Set in the decade of 1980s the show did a spectacular job of nailing the aesthetics- from the town’s infrastructure to the costumes.
2022 also marked a milestone as original streaming service content outperformed outsourced content for the first time. Ozark holds the position in original streamed content (31.3 billion minutes), and Wednesday comes third at 18.6 billion minutes.
After the pandemic, there was a surge in people preferring to watch their favorite movies and Tv shows from the comfort of their couches. The Office pooled in 57.1 billion streaming minutes, but a point to consider- Office has 192 episodes, compared to 42 of Stranger things.
According to Neilson, NCIS holds second place amongst the most streamed content with 38.1 billion minutes. Coming in third is the kid’s favorite, Cocomelon with 37.8 billion minutes.
